Hanging your art or picture is as important
to a room as color coordination is to an outfit.
Frankly it’s really better to not have any
thing hanging at all – then not knowing how
to hang pictures properly.
Of course I have the advantage – I know the rules of hanging art. Yes, there are designer rules to hanging a picture the right way. Now, I’m not just talking about preferential treatments of your opinion/my opinion stuff - there is a certian “subconcious visual delight” to a properly hung painting or picture.
First there is size and scale – kind of like Goldilocks and the 3 Bears – they can be too large, too small or JUST Right. Let’s shoot for just right. A picture should by hung by measuring a rough 2/3 of the furniture piece you are complimenting. Similarity in shape is also a good thing…ie long horizontal couch - horizontal painting. Rectangular lines = rectangular frames. Rounded lines = rounded art…
If you have a lovely smaller piece of art that you feel passionate about hanging in that “perfect place” above the couch…consider a grouping of pictures…otherwise it will be swallowed up by the wall.
Next rule of How To Hang A Picture is – HANG THAT PICTURE AT EYE LEVEL – another way to measure would be the bottom of the frame and to the floor is about 5 feet. Leave at least an 8 to 12 inch wall space between the couch and picture. For tables – 10 to 12 inches above the table top. Now if you have a tall cathedral ceiling you can be a bit more creative with height…a bit.
Certianly there more to this “art” of picture hanging in respect to frame choice, placement and groupings but for now – I’ve got the most distracting aspect of picture hanging defined.
The next important tool in knowing how to hang a picture
is to know what type of hanger to use. I have gathered the best
picture hanging systems for you to compare. I can vouch for all of them because I have used each one several times with my clients and around my own home.
