Frugal Home Design Bedroom Make Over

Let's Start With the Headboard.

Rather than throw out that
old beat up wooden
headboard, all you need
is a staple gun, scissors,
quilt batting and a
designer bed sheet,
bedspread or
upholstery fabric.

Start by covering the
front of the headboard
with the quilt batting
with as many layers as
you need to give the
headboard a padded look.
Then, pull the batting around the sides to the back and secureby stapling batting to the back.

Now place the fabric over the front of the headboard, covering all the batting. Stretch and staple the fabric to the back as well. To give the headboard a tufted look, staple the front to the fabric in a symmetrical pattern then apply buttons using a hot glue gun to cover the stapled tuffs.

For further fun finishing glue some piping around the edge of the headboard or as seen in the picture above, create a trim of batting and fabric in the same way you applied the materials to the entire front.

Now for the Curtains

You can use almost anything for a curtain rod. In the photo it's a simple stick from the yard painted white. Too crooked for you?, Go with the theme of the room and come up with something from around your house, garage or yard.
  • Man cave? How about golf clubs, fishing rod or hockey stick?
  • Girls Bedroom? Go with magic wands, pogo sticks or cheerleader batons.
  • Boys Room? Baseball bats, train tracks glued to a dowel or thin board.
  • Generic Options? Bamboo garden stakes, broom handles, fencing. . .

Paint the Floor

Everyone knows one the best frugal home decorating tools is a can of paint and some elbow grease. Though you may be used to only using it on the walls, now's the time to consider the floor the 5th wall of the room.

Painting a floor will take some preparation based on the surface material but once the research is done apply these tips to ensure the job will be a one time done success.

  • Prepare the surface of the floor by removing all wax.
  • Use fine-grade sandpaper to remove stubborn spots
  • Draw the design of choice on graph paper first, then add the choice of color combination to ensure it is what you want.
  • Keep in mind straight geometric lines are easier to paint than complex intricate patterns.
  • Use painters masking tape liberally
  • Use a high quality semi-gloss latex paint
  • Always finish with a layer of Polyurethane
