Quality Kitchen Cabinets
There are 2 types of cabinets to choose from: Stock or Custom
Stock Cabinets are the ones that are pre made and sold at major building supply or large home depot type stores. They can be finished or unfinished and are built to fit into the most common configurations of kitchens.
These are designed to save the consumer money by using some veneer, some wood and particle board. The amount of each material is determined by the price point.
Custom Cabinets are also made of wood, veneers and particle board (unless you pay for all wood). However, the amount and quality of that wood is much higher. Customs are designed to fit your kitchen as you design it. You will have a greater selection of finishes to choose from along with extra configurations.
Regardless of the type of cabinet you choose, there are some
standard quality characteristics that you need to look for in both the custom and stock cabinets.
Look For Quality By
Checking For:
- Joints that are dove-tailed and not stapled together, especially in the drawers. Bottom of drawer should be grooved and glued to hold up under the constant opening and closing.
- Thicker 3/4" frames and 1/2" to 3/4" drawer sides
- Consistent finish on all stained fronts. Check each box, especially with the stock cabinets. There is a tendency with this mass produced product the staining can become sloppy and radically different from piece to piece.
