Preparing The Room
To Paint
Once you have chosen your color...gathered your paint supplies it's time to start preparing the room.
Getting ready to paint is of course much simpler if your room is empty. If not, move all the furniture the center of the room for easier wall access.
No way around it - preparing the room to paint requires drop cloths!
Next - If you can, it is best to turn off the power while removing outlet covers and switch plates. Continue to remove all other wall hardware such as curtain rods and heat registers. If you are painting the ceiling - release the canopy around your ceiling fan or chandelier and let it slide down and rest on the hanging fixture.
Evaluate the condition of your now empty walls. Do they have cracks, dings or picture hanging holes? Now is the time to do those minor repairs.
Are you dealing with dirt and grease spots? You can try using a nonsudsing cleaner known as Trisodium Phosphate aka, TSP to remove the spots - or you may simply choose to use a primer.
Now it's time to tape off the areas you don't want painted. Choose the appropriate tape to be sure your edges are clean and strong. When applying the tape run a tapered plastic tool of some sort along the tapes edge to create a solid seal.
Keep in mind - Painters tape is designed to come off quickly. It is best to remove it soon after painting - preferably before the paint dries to avoid peeling off the dry paint along with the tape.
